Day 23, Song #23

"Hey Jude" by The Beatles

Released as a single in 1968

Pretty much any song by The Beatles is timeless. I love and respect all of their music and what they have done for the music industry. "Hey Jude" is most definitely one of my favourites. For a little bit of change of pace.. try listening to the version done by Jim Sturgess and Joe Anderson for the movie "Across The Universe". They do an amazing job!

Day 22, Song #22

"Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead

Found on the album "The Bends" released in 1995

Let's take another ride back to the 90's.... one of the classic Radiohead songs. I love it. And to make it even better, every time I hear this song, I think of the movie "Clueless" because Cher made fun of her step-brother Josh because he was listening to his cheesy college music. hehehe Love that movie!

Day 21, Song #21

"The Lines You Amend" by Sloan

Found on the album "One Chord To Another" released in 1996

A cute song - short, sweet and to the point. By one of my favourite Canadian bands. Worth listening to if you haven't heard it before.

Day 20, Song #20

"Save Your Scissors" by City and Colour

Found on the album "Sometimes" released in 2005

I am not really a fan of Dallas Green with his Alexisonfire project, but his solo work ... love it. This guy has one hell of a voice and his songs are all great. This has to be one of my favourites and it definitely deserves a place on this list.

Day 19, Song #19

"My Favourite Book" by Stars

Found on the album "In Our Bedroom After The War" released in 2008

Another great song, by a great band -- formed with members of Broken Social Scene. This is another band who I was introduced to in my university days. I remember them playing in the campus university center in the middle of a day for a free show once! Oh how I wish I could go back to those days sometimes. This is a nice melow tune that helps to showcase a few of the things that makes Stars so great.

Day 18, Song #18

"The Trouble and The Truth" by Cuff The Duke

Found on the album "Life Stories for Minimum Wage" released in 2002

This song brings along many memories for me. I remember being introduced to Cuff The Duke for the first time in Guelph, my first year of university, when they opened for Sam Roberts at a small downtown bar. Was completely taken away from their music from the get-go and have been a fan ever since. I chose to add this particular song to my playlist as my roommate from my university days and I would "jam" all the time with our guitars and we'd play this song together a lot. She's now gone on to be a little rock star herself and I am well.... here. Those were the days...

Day 17, Song #17

"Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)" by The Arcade Fire

Found on the album "Funeral" released in 2004

An incredible song, from an incredible debut album! (I say that a lot don't I? lol) I was so proud to be Canadian when this album skyrocketed! I remember seeing this band play in my little campus bars and then next thing I know, they're HUGE! No playlist is complete without some Arcade Fire.

Day 16, Song #16

"New Divide" by Linkin Park

Written for the Transformers 2 soundtrack

I can easily admit that I am not a huge Linkin Park fan. In my opinion, most of their music is just too hard for my liking. But every so often, they do something right. This song is incredible!! Hearing it on the radio for months before Transformers 2 was released aided it pumping up my excitement for the movie. Although the movie wasn't as good as the first, it was amazing how the main riff from the song carried throughout. Even if you put the movie aside, the song is just great! A perfect song to mark the summer of 2009.

Day 15, Song #15

"The Blower's Daughter" by Damien Rice

Found on the album "O" released in 2002

An amazing and powerful song by a crazy-talented Irish man. There is just something so deep and beautiful about this song, and all of Damien's songs. Gives me goosebumps every single time.

Day 14, Song #14

"1, 2, 3, 4" by Feist
Found on the album "The Reminder" released in 1997

This song is probably most widely known thanks to the iPod commercials 2 years ago. I know Feist from her beginnings in the band, Broken Social Scene. Her solo stuff is phenomenal and this song is no exception.

Day 13, Song #13

"Paper Moon" by Our Lady Peace

Found on the album "Burn Burn" released today - July 21, 2009

I just had to kick off the release of the 7th album by my all time favourite band by posting my favourite song from said album. This entire album is fantastic (surprise, surprise).. but Paper Moon is just.. Wow... Give it a listen!

Day 12, Song #12

"Good Ridence (Time Of Your Life)" by Green Day

Originally released on the album "Nimrod" which was released in 1997

This is a classic song that will never get old. I was 13 years old when it was released. I loved the song back then, and still love it now. A must have for any playlist.

Day 11, Song #11

"Forgotten" by Avril Lavigne

Found on the album "Under My Skin" released in 2004.

I know, I know, what's with all the girly stuff right? don't worry, this list really won't disappoint. I only pick the best. I respect Avril for her music. I might not respect her for other things, but the majority of her music is actually pretty good - this song especially.

Day 10, Song #10

"Him" by Lily Allen

Found on the album "It's Not Me It's You", released in 2009.

This is a cute/insightful song by the brilliant Lily Allen. Give it a listen.. it will really make you think about "Him" and wonder.

Day 9, Song #9

"Viva La Vida" by Coldplay

From the album "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" released in 2008

This song was like my anthem of the fall/winter of 2008. Loved it from the first time I heard it and was very happy to hear new stuff from a great band.

Day 8, Song #8

"First Day Of My Life" by Bright Eyes

Found on the album "I'm Awake, It's Morning" released in 2005

A nice, soft, and sweet song by the incredible Conner Oberst. It's pretty hard not to like this one folks.

Day 7, Song #7

"Unusual" by Britney Spears

Found on the album "Circus" released in 2009

Ok, ok.. yes Britney Spears doesn't exactly fit in with the list I've compiled so far, but hear me out. This song has this groovy, mellow feel and I absolutely love it. Another awesome summer song. I'm sitting here listening to it totally picturing driving at night, windows rolled down, warm wind blowing in my hair... Just give it a listen ok? :)

Day 6, Song #6

"Combat Baby" by Metric

Found on the album "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" released in 2003

If you have never heard of Metric, this would be a good song to listen to as an introduction to this wicked Canadian band. From their debut album, "Combat Baby" is the song that got me hooked and I still love it, and the band, to this day.

Day 5, Song #5

"Brother Down" by Sam Roberts

Found on the album "We Were Born In a Flame" released in 2002

Sticking to my theme of summer tunes, I am always drawn to this one by Sam Roberts. I remember this single being released in my last month of high school. I loved it so much and it was my anthem of my last summer before embarking on the next big step of my life.. university. Anything by Sam Roberts will always top my listening lists.

Day 4, Song #4

"Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn and John

From the album "Writer's Block" released in 2006.

Summer is here, so I thought I might as well post one of my favourite summer tunes. It is just so fitting to crank this tune in your car as you drive on a sunny day with the windows rolled down.

Day 3, Song #3

"Use Somebody" by Kings Of Leon

Found on the album "Only By the Night", released 2008

I know, I know.. this is a fairly new song still very popular on mainstream radio to this date. I really don't know what it is about this song, but from my first listen, I just loved it to bits. I could honestly listen to this song over and over and never get sick of it. Due to this reason, it deserves to have a place in this list.

Day 2, Song #2

"Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

Found originally on the soundtrack to the movie "Once"

I learned about the movie "Once" after reading a blog post by OLP front man Raine Maida around Feb/08. I promptly went to my local Blockbuster and rented the movie. I loved it so much that I watched it twice in the two days that I had the dvd for! It wasn't long until the movie was a part of my personal collection. The Oscar-winning song "Falling Slowly" is most definitely my favourite song of the film and is a perfect introduction to the incredible music made by this pair.

Day 1, Song #1

"Life" by Our Lady Peace.

Released on the album "Spiritual Machines" in 2000.

I chose this as my first song because it has got to be one of my favourite songs by my favourite bands. I've gone through some pretty crappy moments in my life (which I am not going to talk about on here) and during these moments, I seemed to have always turned to Our Lady Peace and this song. The meaning of this song is just so deep, and hits really close to home. I truly do live by Raine's words when times are tough "Life is waiting for you; it's all messed up, but we'll survive." No matter how rough things seem to be at a certain moment, it will get better.

Why I am Doing This

Ok, ok.. so I know I am most definitely not the first person to do this, nor will I be the last. Due to this, perhaps some people might ask why I am even doing it in the first place? I was thinking about the fact that yes, this idea is not original, BUT the result in the end will be original and will be completely 'me'. Twenty different people can compile a list of 365 songs and I bet each one will be totally different as each list will pertain to the creator's interests. If anything, I am choosing to follow through with this blog for myself. It will be the play list of my life to date and I actually couldn't be more excited to get started!

Who am I?

So this is me. My name is Laura and I am a 20-something girl currently living in the GTA. Music has played a major role in my life for as long as I can remember. It is part of my soul.
I grew up surrounded by music; let it by my dad playing the piano with us singing along, or my great-uncle playing on his fiddle, or my uncle playing his drums... It's in my blood. I first learned how to play the piano when I was 6 years old, taking lessons from my grandmother who lived right next door. When looking back, I remember enjoying it to an extent, but actually disliked it a bit and I think I just resented the fact that my grandmother would always check on me to make sure I was practising, etc. After several years and having learned the basics I quit.
The piano lessons were not a complete waste of time though as it tought me the basics in music and also taught me how to read it. I then went on to sing in many choirs throughout elementary school; I also performed several solos in music fesitvals. In grade 5 (I was 10y/o) I got to learn how to play the recorder. This was my first stab at learning an instrument since the piano several years before. I absolutely loved it. I even went on to perform solos in the music festival, and even performed several times with the school choir.
The following year is when my musical abilities began to flourish and really start pumping through my veins. I learned how to play the flute and really fell in love with music. The flute brought me much success in music for the remainder of my elementary school career (was section leader for flutes in the concert band for grades 7 and 8). I then went on to play in my high school band for one year. After a bad experience with an awful music teacher, I decided to quit the band part way through my grade 10 year and that was it.
Throughout high school, I began to really explore and listen to so many different types of music in attempt to really find myself musically and see what I really liked. I made the jump from listening to almost every genre of music, until I found what really spoke to me. The likes of the rock/alternative/indie world.
My musical appreciation and tastes blossomed throughout my university days. I spent a lot of my spare time attending concerts, discovering new bands and even teaching myself how to play the guitar. Music has just always been there, and it always will be. So I found it fitting that I attempt this little feat of posting one of my favourite songs for the next year. Even I am excited to see what the list looks like at the end of this!
